Veo 3 Prompt Guide: 40+ Veo 3.1 Prompts, Templates and Examples

Glass film clapperboard with a film strip showing AI video scenes: a singer on a neon rooftop, desert dunes, ramen, a dog news anchor and a lighthouse

The best Veo 3 prompts read like a shot list, not a wish. Name the camera, the subject, the action, the setting, the style and the sound, in that order, and Veo 3.1 will follow you far more closely than it follows a vague one-liner.

This guide gives you the formula, a camera and audio cheat sheet, six copy-paste templates and 40+ ready-to-use prompt examples for ads, film, social, dialogue and more. Every prompt works in Veo 3 and Veo 3.1; the advanced section covers features only 3.1 has.

The Veo prompt formula

text
[Camera] + [Subject] + [Action] + [Setting] + [Style & light] + [Sound]

Example:

text
Medium shot, a tired night-shift nurse, sipping coffee from a paper cup by a hospital window, city lights blurred outside, cool blue fluorescent light with a warm glow from the vending machine, realistic, shallow depth of field. Ambient: distant beeping monitors, a quiet hum. She sighs and says, "Two more hours."

Anatomy of a great Veo prompt

Each part of the formula controls something different. Leave one out and Veo fills the gap with its own default, which is usually generic.

PartWhat it controlsWeakStrong
CameraFraming, angle, movement"a video of""low-angle tracking shot"
SubjectWho or what is on screen"a woman""a woman in her 60s with silver braids and a yellow raincoat"
ActionWhat happens, in order"walking""steps off the tram, opens her umbrella, looks up at the rain"
SettingPlace and time"in a city""a narrow Lisbon street at dusk, wet cobblestones"
Style & lightLook and mood"cinematic""warm streetlight against blue hour, 35mm film grain, shallow focus"
SoundDialogue, effects, ambience, musicnothing"rain on the umbrella, a tram bell, she laughs and says, 'Of course it's raining.'"

Four rules that apply to every prompt:

  1. One shot per clip. An 8-second clip fits one camera move and one or two actions. Need more? Use timestamps (see Advanced) or several clips.
  2. Concrete beats clever. Name colours, materials, ages, lenses and times of day.
  3. Order matters. Put what matters most first; the camera and subject carry the most weight.
  4. Say what you want, not what you don't. "An empty desert road" works better than "no cars". Save exclusions for things like subtitles.

Veo camera movements and shot types: cheat sheet

Camera language is the most powerful part of a Veo prompt. These terms are understood reliably.

Wide shotFull body plus surroundingsAction, setting the scene
Medium shotWaist upConversation, presenters

Lens, focus and light

  • Lens: wide-angle lens, 50mm, 85mm portrait lens, macro lens, anamorphic.
  • Focus: shallow depth of field, deep focus, rack focus from A to B, soft focus.
  • Light: golden hour, blue hour, overcast soft light, hard noon sun, neon, candlelight, rim light, backlit silhouette.
  • Look: 35mm film grain, 16mm documentary, VHS, glossy commercial, stylized 3D animation, anime, stop-motion, black and white noir.

How to prompt audio and dialogue in Veo

Veo 3 and 3.1 generate sound with the picture, so the soundtrack is part of your prompt. Give each layer its own short sentence.

LayerHow to write itExample
DialogueSpeaker + delivery + words in quotesThe old captain growls, "Nobody leaves this ship."
Sound effects"SFX:" + specific sounds tied to actionsSFX: boots on a metal deck, a heavy door slams.
Ambience"Ambient:" + the background worldAmbient: wind howling, waves hitting the hull.
MusicGenre, instruments, energyA low cello drone builds tension.

Dialogue tips

  • Keep it short. 8 to 12 words fit an 8-second clip. Longer lines get rushed.
  • Tag the speaker by something visible: "the woman in the green coat says…".
  • Describe the voice: "whispers", "shouts over the music", "in a warm Southern accent", "deadpan".
  • Two speakers? Write them in order: He asks, "Ready?" She grins and answers, "Always."
  • Stop stray captions by adding "no subtitles".

Make it silent or music-only

Veo adds sound by default. For a clean plate, write "no dialogue, only natural ambient sound". For a music bed you will replace later, write "no music" so the audio is easy to edit.

Advanced Veo 3.1 prompting techniques

These techniques use Veo 3.1 features to get control a single text prompt cannot.

Timestamp prompts: several shots in one clip

Split an 8-second clip into timed beats. Veo cuts between them while keeping the character and look consistent.

text
[00:00-00:02] Medium shot from behind a young explorer with a leather satchel pushing aside a jungle vine.
[00:02-00:04] Reverse shot of her face, eyes wide with awe. SFX: rustling leaves, distant bird calls.
[00:04-00:06] Tracking shot as she steps into a clearing and touches carvings on a crumbling stone wall.
[00:06-00:08] Wide crane shot rising to reveal her standing small in a vast temple swallowed by jungle. A gentle orchestral score swells.

Keep each beat to one action and use two to four beats per clip.

Reference image prompts

With up to three reference images, describe the scene and point to each image with @ in Veo Studio. Do not re-describe what the image already shows; describe what it does.

text
@[image1] sits at a café table and slides @[image2] across to the camera, smiling. Medium shot, warm afternoon light, shallow focus. She says, "Your new favourite bag." Ambient: café chatter.

First and last frame prompts

With a start and end image, the prompt only needs the journey between them: camera path, transformation and sound.

text
The camera performs a smooth 180-degree arc around the singer, from her face to the view behind her of the cheering crowd. The crowd's roar rises as the stage lights flare. She sings, "When you look at me, I see a million stars."

Scene extension prompts

When extending a clip, write only what happens next, as if the camera never stopped: "She turns from the wall, follows the sound of running water and finds a hidden waterfall." Repeating the original prompt makes Veo restart the action.

JSON prompts for Veo 3

Some creators write prompts as JSON to keep every element in its own field. Veo reads it as text, so it is no more powerful than a well-written paragraph, but it makes prompts easy to reuse, vary and generate at scale.

json
{
  "shot": "slow dolly-in, medium close-up",
  "subject": "a barista in her 20s with a nose ring and a denim apron",
  "action": "pours latte art, looks up and smiles",
  "setting": "small sunlit café, plants in the window, morning",
  "style": "warm natural light, shallow depth of field, 35mm film look",
  "audio": {
    "dialogue": "She says, \"Best one today.\"",
    "sfx": "milk steamer hiss, cup set on saucer",
    "ambient": "quiet café chatter"
  }
}

Let Gemini or ChatGPT write the first draft

If you are stuck, ask any chatbot to expand a one-line idea using the formula: "Rewrite this as a Veo 3 prompt with camera, subject, action, setting, style and sound: a cat that runs a bakery." Then edit the result; you know your shot better than the model does.

Veo prompt mistakes (and how to fix them)

MistakeWhat happensFix
Vague one-liner ("a cool car video")Generic stock-footage lookAdd camera, setting, light and sound
Three scenes in one promptVeo merges or skips partsOne shot per clip, or timestamp the beats

When a prompt almost works, change one element at a time: camera first, then light, then action. You will learn faster and spend fewer credits.

Veo prompt FAQ

How long should a Veo 3 prompt be?

About 40 to 120 words is the sweet spot for one 8-second clip. Shorter prompts leave too much to chance; much longer ones pack in more than 8 seconds can show.

Do Veo 3 prompts work in Veo 3.1?

Yes. Veo 3.1 understands the same prompts and follows them more closely. It also adds reference images, first and last frame and scene extension, which need the extra prompt styles covered above.

How do I make a character talk in Veo?

Put the line in quotation marks and say who speaks and how: The pilot glances back and says calmly, "Hold on tight." Veo generates the voice and lip-syncs it.

How do I keep the same character across clips?

Use the same reference image in every generation and repeat the same short description of the character. Clothing and hair details help.

Does Veo support negative prompts?

In plain prompts, describe what you want instead of listing what you don't. The exception is unwanted subtitles or text, where "no subtitles" works well.

Are JSON prompts better for Veo 3?

Not inherently. JSON keeps prompts organized and easy to reuse, but a clear, well-structured paragraph gives the same results.

Is there a Veo 3 prompt generator?

Any chatbot can expand an idea into a Veo prompt if you give it the formula from this guide. The templates above work as a manual generator: fill the brackets and go.

Start prompting

Pick a template, fill the brackets and hit generate. Try your first prompt free in Veo Studio, and if you are new, read how to use Veo 3 for a full walkthrough of the settings.
